Jon’s Field Guide to Going Out Alone (And Still Crushing It)

Going out alone will be hard. It will suck. You will feel weird at times, but that’s okay. Whatever it is you’re worried about, believe me, I’ve probably experienced it. Better yet, I know exactly how to avoid it, and how to kill it when you go out alone. So with no further ado, here’s the Jon Anthony field guide to going out alone.

Going out alone is one of the hardest things I ever did. No bullshit. It never came naturally, AT ALL—in fact, the opposite came naturally. I was more content just sitting at home and playing Halo 3. I’d rather level up my character on World of Warcraft than go out alone. It seemed stupid at the time.

But, eventually I reached a point where enough was enough. I was tired of my friend group never wanting to go out. I was tired of doing the same old stupid thing over and over again. I wanted to eventually build some meaningful relationships. I had to go out alone.

Going Out Alone (Part I)
by Rob Virges

Student: “Hey Rob, lately I haven’t been able to find a consistent wing to go out and my friends are terrified of approaching women, I really wanted to try going out alone but I just can’t get over that paralyzing fear and anxiety to get my ass out of the house and into the bar to practice the skills you taught me”

For a lot of men out there who struggle with trying to meet women in bars and in clubs, going out can seem like an anxiety riddled roller coaster ride of emotions. Going out alone on the other hand can seem like the equivalent of a gladiator getting into a stadium in front of a crowd of thousands to fight to the death.

It’s a completely understandable fear and can seem like an impossible feat being able to go out and meet strangers, pretty strangers without the security blanket of support that comes from having friends and familiar faces around. As men we all face these fears and I can tell you one thing even after pushing my ass for a few years to go out and try it out for those nights, you’ll learn to enjoy and see the benefits of riding solo or if you’re in the position where you have to go out without and friends and familiar faces.

How to Go Out By Yourself And Enjoy It

Think of it like going on a date with yourself.

Like many women my age, I’ve watched my girlfriends’ titles change from “Ms.” to “Mrs.” and in some cases, to “Mommy,” leaving my roster of weekend compatriots short a few star players. Getting together with them now requires a calendar and babysitter, and not the sporadic cross-town cab ride it used to, and that’s okay -- they’re worth the effort. It still leaves me with a ton of places to go and things to see in between, though, and rather than revel in paranoia about what people might think about me rolling solo into a party, I’ve realized that life doesn’t always require a flock of females by my side.

If you don’t have balls of steel, going out alone (on the weekend, especially) can feel nerve-wracking at first -- but it can be done, and without a Xanax prescription.

The Art of Rolling Solo: Going Out Alone as an Introvert

Are you tired of relying on your friends for every good night out?

Going out alone, going out by yourself. Sounds kinda lonely, doesn’t it? Like something you would only do if you didn’t have any friends to go with?

Here’s the thing. Now, I want you to get this in your head right away. Forget everything you ever thought you knew about partying.

Going out to a club or bar doesn’t have to be a group excursion.
Think about it like this. You wouldn’t stop yourself going into a café on a random afternoon to sit down and have a coffee and a snack, just because you happened to be by yourself at the time and felt like having a darn coffee!

Going out alone isn’t any different.

Why you should go to a baseball game alone

It seems as if solo baseball attendance is only "allowed" for the uber-fans, like author and baseball collector Zack Hample. "I've attended more than 1,100 MLB games, and I've probably been to three-quarters of them by myself," he wrote in a Reddit thread last year. "I prefer it that way, but that's because I have my own routine/agenda that would drive most people crazy... The way I see it, baseball is baseball and friends are friends; there's no need to force a combination."

But, as it has been said before, there is a certain happy thrill to doing something by yourself. Stepping out of the cab at the stadium's entrance gates, I was free to wander the grounds as I pleased, fully soaking in the unfamiliar L.A. crowd. Once inside I didn't miss any of the game because someone was distracting me with stories about their annoying coworker or bad Tinder date — and I even like hearing about those things from my friends. There was a meditative peace to being in a crowd by yourself.

Going to the ballpark alone: Seeking solitude in a social sport

Baseball is an incredibly social sport to love. It's a game that attracts a vast community of fans to buoy you through wins and losses, good times and bad. Sometimes I even measure my affection for baseball in the many connections I've made, and the community I've fostered through it. In the digital age, baseball is a game you can watch with countless others without ever leaving your couch, with each play celebrated or lamented via shared online musings.

For those of us who are introverted, baseball provides a comfortable space to talk about something outside ourselves. When people discover you love the game, it can replace the usual chit-chat about work and relationships. The excitement, joy, and devastation that baseball provides means you're never short of things to talk about, especially when you want to steer the conversation away from things you'd prefer not to discuss.

6 Flirting Tips Every Shy Girl Needs

Flirting comes easy to some people, but not to those with shy personalities, which is where flirting tips for shy girls can help. One of the biggest roadblocks for shy people when they find someone they're interested in is that they're afraid of getting embarrassed or that the other person may not like them back.

Would you want to approach someone who is frowning or looking at the floor? If you see someone you'd like to talk to, glance in his or her direction and smile. Once you catch the person's eye, look away. Don't stare.

Also smile if you are simply talking to a friend. A smile lets people know that you're approachable.

11 Subtle Signs Someone Is Probably Flirting With You, Even If You Don't Think So

It can be difficult to tell if someone is flirting with you, even on a good day. People get nervous, they try to "play it cool," and some simply lack the self confidence necessary to flirt in an obvious way. If you've ever encountered this issue — especially when it comes to someone you're interested in — then you know how annoying it can be. Do they like you? Or don't they? It can be tough to tell.

And that's why you need to start recognizing the subtle signs of flirting. "It is important because you could be missing an opportunity to connect with someone," says licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Christopher Barnes. And, it can save you a lot of guesswork, while also opening the door for further communication. If that cute stranger, or your love interest at work, is throwing off these signs, then you can kind of help them along.
